A recent report from Impact Forecasting catastrophe
model development team, reveals that wildfires in California in 2015
have already caused more damage and financial loss in the U.S. since
2007. According to the report, several wildfires impacted California
during the month of September: the Valley Fire, which occurred northwest
of San Francisco, was the third-most damaging wildfire in state history,
killing four people and destroying 1,958 homes and other structures.
Forecast economic losses from the fire were in excess of $1.5 billion,
with preliminarily insured losses estimated at more than $925 million.
The Butte Fire, which occurred southeast of Sacramento and was the
seventh-most damaging wildfire in state history, killed two people and
caused total estimated economic losses of at $450 million, with
insurance losses expected to be above $225 million.

Surplus lines insurers in fact wrote 23,120 homeowners
policies in California in 2014, representing a 91% increase from the
12,097 written just two years earlier, according to the Surplus Line
Association of California. Meanwhile, homeowners in the area are
increasingly hard-pressed to find the insurance required to protect
against the damage that these wildfires cause. Major wildfire, mudslide area property insurance in
losses in the billions of dollars in the last decade have
led some major carriers to stop writing homeowners policies for many of
the households considered at high risk of fire. Allstate Corp, for
example, in 2007 stopped writing new homeowners policies in California
altogether. Farmers Insurance and State Farm have become more
discriminating about the areas they will insure homes. “As much of the
industry has done, we continue to evaluate wildfire exposure and risk,”
said a spokesman for Farmers Insurance.

More people may be dropped from fire coverage and that residents of high-risk
areas may have to shop for more expensive insurance as wildfires become
more destructive because of the drought.

California’s drought is a game changer and that insurance companies are taking steps to
protect themselves including providing coverage with options. It’s time to get your California Wildfire Liability Quote.

Part of the attraction of these specialty policies is they offer broader
coverage than the state-sponsored program. That means people have to look
elsewhere for other coverage that would normally be included in a
standard homeowner’s policy, such as liability for accidents or injury.
